Custom Poker Cards: Stock, Finish, QC, and Casino vs Promo Grade
A custom deck is judged by its snap, its grip, and whether the backs align. This guide covers card stock and core, linen and plastic finishes, the QC gates that matter, and how casino grade differs from promo grade.
What this guide covers

The core is the anti-cheat layer. A black core blocks light so the next card cannot be read through it; a single-ply paper card fails this test, which is why casino and premium decks use a layered build.
A playing card is a sandwich: a core (often black or blue core for opacity) between two white facing papers, then a coating. Standard promo stock is 280-300 gsm with a blue core; casino stock runs 310-350 gsm with a black core that blocks light so you cannot see the next card through it. Thickness for 300 gsm is about 0.30 mm; for 350 gsm around 0.35 mm.
The core is the anti-cheat layer. A single-ply 'paper' card lets backlight reveal the value; a black core kills that. For custom branded decks where the owner cares about feel, the 300 gsm blue-core stock matches familiar consumer decks and shuffles cleanly.
From the factory floor
Promo: 280-300 gsm, blue core, 0.30 mm.
Casino: 310-350 gsm, black core, 0.33-0.35 mm.
Plastic: 100% PVC, 0.32 mm, washable.
The 'linen' finish is an embossed texture pressed into the coating that mimics the woven feel of a casino card and improves grip. A smooth 'plastic' (PVC or PVC-coated) finish is fully washable and lasts for years of handling. Casino finish combines linen emboss with a durable UV coating that resists edge wear.
For custom promo decks, a smooth matte or soft-touch coating photographs well and feels modern, while linen reads traditional and premium. Plastic decks cost more but outlast paper by an order of magnitude, ideal for branded decks meant to be kept and used.
Playing card finishes and their trade-offs.
| Finish | Feel | Durability | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linen emboss | Textured grip | High | Casino-style, premium |
| Smooth matte | Soft, modern | Medium | Promo, photo-friendly |
| Plastic PVC | Slick, washable | Very high | Keepsake, outdoor |
| UV casino | Grippy, tough | High | Frequent handling |
tip
For a deck people will actually shuffle, choose linen emboss with UV coating. For a deck meant as a gift that lasts, go plastic; it survives spills and pockets for years.
Card QC has three gates. First, the snap test: a card should flex and return flat without a permanent curl; we sample 1 in 200 and reject lots with >2% curl. Second, squareness: corners must be 90 degrees within 0.3 mm or the deck fans unevenly. Third, print registration: face and back must align to +/-0.2 mm so the index corners line up.
Coating uniformity is the silent defect. A patchy UV coat makes some cards stick in the fan; we inspect under raking light and reject any sheet with visible mottling. Edge paint, if specified, must be even to 0.5 mm or it looks cheap on a fresh deck.
Specification
Snap: return flat, curl < 2% of sample.
Squareness: 90 deg +/- 0.3 mm.
Registration: face/back +/- 0.2 mm.
Casino grade means black core, linen + UV, tight registration, and a consistent snap across all 52+ cards; it is built for thousands of shuffles. Promo grade is a branded deck for giveaways: blue-core 300 gsm, smooth or linen finish, perfect for a logo but not engineered for daily dealing. The price gap is mostly the core and the coating, not the print.
If your deck carries a marketing message, promo grade is right and saves budget for a better box. If you sell a playable premium deck, step up to casino grade so the experience matches the price.
warn
Don't label a blue-core promo deck as 'casino grade'. Buyers who shuffle it nightly will notice the snap and opacity difference immediately, and the trust cost exceeds the savings.
A deck spec lists card count (54 standard), stock and core, finish, coating, box type, and quantity. Digital short runs start at 100 decks; offset casino grade starts near 1,000. Lead is 10-15 days digital, 20-30 days offset with plate and core setup. Tuck boxes are usually 300 gsm with a window or foil option.
