Custom Printed Wrapping Paper: Material, Print, and MOQ

Custom wrapping paper turns every purchase into a brand moment. This guide covers base weights from tissue to coated stock, flexo versus digital print, real-world use cases, and the MOQ that keeps you from overstocking.

Base materials and weights

Wrapping paper starts as a lightweight substrate, typically 80-120 gsm tissue or kraft, up to 100-140 gsm coated paper for premium retail wrap. Tissue (17-30 gsm) is the thin, delicate option for boutique apparel; 80-100 gsm kraft gives a rustic, recyclable look; 120 gsm coated gloss or matte takes the sharpest print and the most vivid color.

For luxury, a 100-140 gsm uncoated or soft-touch stock with a subtle texture reads expensive and survives handling. Sustainability buyers increasingly ask for FSC kraft or recycled-content paper at 90-110 gsm, which prints slightly softer but aligns with eco claims.

From the factory floor

Tissue 17-30 gsm: delicate, boutique.
Kraft 80-100 gsm: rustic, recyclable.
Coated 120 gsm: vivid print, premium retail.

Print methods: flexo, gravure, digital

Flexography is the workhorse for medium runs: fast, cheap per roll, good for bold patterns, at around 150-200 lpi. Gravure delivers the finest detail and the most consistent color across millions of meters, ideal for a single hero pattern at huge volume, but the cylinder engraving adds setup cost. Digital (inkjet) allows short runs, unlimited SKUs, and personalization with no plate, though unit cost stays higher.

Resolution for wrap patterns is usually 300 dpi at file level; the effective screen is coarser than labels because the paper is viewed from a distance. Registration tolerance is about +/-0.5 mm, acceptable for repeating motifs but worth tightening for logo-critical designs.

Print method vs run length for custom wrapping paper.

Method Min run Detail Best for
Flexo 3,000 m 150-200 lpi Seasonal repeating patterns
Gravure 20,000 m 200+ lpi Huge single-pattern volume
Digital inkjet 500 m 300 dpi Short runs, personalization

tip

For a one-off holiday design under 1,000 rolls, go digital and skip the plate fee. For a repeating best-seller, flexo wins on unit cost once you pass 3,000 meters.

Use cases from retail to events

Retail brands use custom wrap as quiet advertising: a recognizable pattern on every purchase becomes part of the identity. Gift and subscription boxes use it to extend the unboxing story. Event planners print dates and hashtags for weddings and launches. Even manufacturers wrap spare parts in branded paper to reinforce the OEM impression.

Pattern design matters more than people expect. A 300-450 mm vertical repeat scales well across standard 500-700 mm wide rolls; too small a repeat looks busy, too large wastes ink. We recommend a tile that repeats every 1-2 rolls for continuity at the seam.

Roll width and core

Standard roll widths are 500, 600, and 700 mm on a 38 or 50 mm core. Sheet formats (500 x 700 mm, 700 x 1000 mm) suit gift shops that sell by the sheet. Tell us the dispenser or the sheet size so we cut to fit.

MOQ, lead time, and customization

Digital MOQ is about 500 meters or 300 sheets; flexo starts near 3,000 meters; gravure near 20,000 meters. Lead time runs 10-15 days for digital, 20-30 days for flexo with plate making. Customization includes repeat pattern, Pantone match (target Delta-E < 3), and optional matte/gloss coating.

Specification

Digital: 500 m / 300 sheets, 10-15 day.
Flexo: 3,000 m, 20-30 day with plate.
Coating: matte or gloss, optional soft-touch.

warn

Ordering 20,000 m of a dated holiday pattern leaves you with dead stock in February. Match run length to the season; use digital for short, time-bound designs.

A ready-to-send spec

A clean RFQ lists substrate (gsm), width, repeat size, print method preference, Pantone colors, coating, and quantity. With those, a plant quotes accurately and avoids a proof mismatch.

Substrate Kraft 90 gsm or coated 120 gsm
Width 500 / 600 / 700 mm roll
Repeat 300-450 mm vertical tile
Print Flexo or digital, 300 dpi file
Coating Matte / gloss / soft-touch
MOQ 500 m digital, 3,000 m flexo
