Sustainable Packaging Materials Guide 2026: Recycled, FSC, Mono-Material, Compostable
Sustainability in packaging in 2026 is no longer a single badge; it is a stack of material decisions driven by regulation such as the EU PPWR and extended producer responsibility schemes. This guide compares recycled content, FSC-certified board, mono-material structures, and compostable films so you can choose a path that is both defensible and cost-aware.
What this guide covers
Recycled board is the fastest lever for lower virgin-fibre demand. Our greyboard cores already contain high post-consumer recycled content at a density of 0.65 to 0.70 g/cm3. A 1.5 mm recycled greyboard converts to about 1020 gsm, the same as virgin by weight but with a fraction of the fibre footprint. The catch is print surface: recycled face stock shows specks, so for bright white exteriors we laminate a thin coated or FSC virgin liner rather than printing straight onto the core.
For folding cartons, recycled SBS alternatives exist but trend lower in brightness; many brands accept a natural kraft or off-white look to claim the savings. For rigid boxes the recycled greyboard is invisible inside the wrap, so you get the sustainability win with zero visual compromise on the outside.
FSC certification proves the fibre comes from responsibly managed forests and a tracked chain of custody. For a buyer the meaningful document is the FSC-STD-40-004 chain-of-custody certificate held by the converter, plus the right to print the FSC mark under the licensed logo programme. Do not accept a mill certificate alone; the certificate must name the company that actually makes your box. Recycled-content claims can also carry the FSC Recycled label.
FSC Mix means a blend of controlled and certified virgin fibre; FSC Recycled means post-consumer content only. If your brand story is about cutting virgin forest use, specify FSC Recycled for the wrap and the insert, and pair it with a recycled greyboard core for a near-closed loop.
Mono-material packaging uses one polymer or one fibre family so the item sorts cleanly in existing streams. The classic problem is a carton laminated with a different-film window or a foil that contaminates paper recycling. A mono-material paper box with water-based coating and no foil sorts as paper; a mono-material PET or PP pouch sorts as rigid plastic. The discipline is to avoid bonded dissimilar materials unless the local facility can separate them.
Luxury finishes fight mono-material: hot foil is a different substrate from paper, and a soft-touch PET lamination is a different polymer from a paper core. If recyclability is the priority, swap foil for a high-opacity soy-based metallic ink and skip the lamination, accepting a slightly less tactile surface.
Compostable films such as PLA and paper-based windows biodegrade under industrial composting, not in a home bin or the ocean. They suit dry goods and short-shelf-life items but can confuse consumers who treat them as recyclable. Certifications like EN 13432 (industrial compostable) set the bar; without that mark a 'compostable' claim is weak. For rigid boxes, a moulded pulp insert is the compostable workhorse, replacing EVA foam for many cosmetics.
Pick by end-of-life infrastructure available to your customer, not by the label alone.
| Material path | Fibre source | End-of-life | Luxury feel | 2026 note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recycled greyboard | Post-consumer | Recyclable paper | High (hidden core) | Default for rigid walls |
| FSC virgin wrap | Certified forest | Recyclable paper | High (bright print) | Need CoC cert |
| Mono-material paper | Virgin or recycled | Clean paper stream | Medium | Avoid foil/lam |
| Compostable PLA | Bio-based | Industrial compost | Low-Medium | EN 13432 needed |
| Moulded pulp | Recycled fibre | Compostable/rec | Low | Foam replacement |
Specification
Greyboard density 0.65-0.70 g/cm3; 1.5 mm approx 1020 gsm, 2.0 mm approx 1360 gsm.
FSC claim requires FSC-STD-40-004 chain-of-custody certificate naming the converter.
Compostable film should meet EN 13432 for industrial composting credibility.
Regulation is now the driver
The EU PPWR and national EPR fees penalise non-recyclable and high-virgin-fibre packaging from 2026. Design for the stream your customer actually has. Our materials deep-dive is at /blog/custom-packaging-box-materials-guide and the white-card angle at /blog/white-card-box-packaging-guide-2026.
FAQ
Is recycled greyboard weaker than virgin?
No. By grammage it performs the same; a 1.5 mm recycled core at about 1020 gsm is as rigid as virgin. The only difference is surface speckle, which is hidden by the wrap on a rigid box.
Can I still use gold foil and be sustainable?
Partially. Foil is a different substrate from paper and can hinder recycling, but you can use FSC board and soy ink around it and claim those. For a fully recycle-ready box, swap foil for metallic soy ink.
What does PPWR change for me?
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation raises recycled-content minimums and EPR fees, so specifying recycled or mono-material now avoids future non-compliance and levies.
Is moulded pulp strong enough for glass?
For many cosmetics yes, with a cavity tuned to the bottle. For very heavy or sharp items EVA still protects better; choose pulp where the product is light and stable.
Design packaging that passes 2026 rules
Send your product and target market and we will specify a recycled, FSC, mono-material, or compostable structure with the certificates your buyers require.
