Perfume Box Dimensions: How to Choose the Right Size from Bottle to Carton
The right perfume box size starts from the capped bottle and a fixed clearance rule. This guide explains the 3–5 mm clearance method, gives worked tables for 30 ml, 50 ml, and 100 ml bottles, and lists the sizing mistakes that cause late dieline changes.
What this guide covers
Start from the bottle's outer dimensions, not the label size. Add 3 to 5 mm of clearance on every side so the glass seats without rattle yet slides in by hand. Interior length = bottle height + 6 to 10 mm, width = bottle width + 6 to 10 mm, depth = bottle depth + 6 to 10 mm. Then add the board thickness (1.5–2.0 mm per wall) to reach the exterior dimensions.
A 2 mm clearance feels snug but causes glass-on-board scuffing and makes hand loading at the filler line slow. A 5 mm clearance with a die-cut paper insert absorbs the 1.2 m drop energy under ISTA 3A while keeping the bottle centred. Tolerance on finished size is ±0.5 mm.
Table 1 — 30 ml bottle to box interior/exterior using 5 mm clearance.
| Bottle (30 ml) | Bottle mm (H×W×D) | Interior mm | Exterior @1.5 mm board |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slim flacon | 75×35×25 | 85×45×35 | 88×48×38 |
| Standard | 85×40×30 | 95×50×40 | 98×53×43 |
| Wide squat | 70×50×35 | 80×60×45 | 83×63×48 |
A 50 ml fragrance bottle typically measures 100 to 110 mm tall, 40 to 60 mm wide, and 30 to 45 mm deep. Applying 5 mm clearance and a 1.5 mm board gives a shell around 120 to 130 mm tall and 60 to 80 mm wide. This is the format most book-style and drawer boxes are built around.
Table 2 — 50 ml bottle to box dimensions with 5 mm clearance.
| Bottle (50 ml) | Bottle mm (H×W×D) | Interior mm | Exterior @1.5 mm board |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall slim | 110×40×30 | 120×50×40 | 123×53×43 |
| Standard | 100×50×40 | 110×60×50 | 113×63×53 |
| Wide | 95×60×45 | 105×70×55 | 108×73×58 |
A 100 ml bottle runs 120 to 140 mm tall, 55 to 75 mm wide, and 40 to 55 mm deep. With 5 mm clearance and a thicker 2.0 mm board for the extra weight, the exterior lands near 150 mm tall and 85 mm wide. At this size a shoulder or drawer box carries the weight better than a slim book-style.
Table 3 — 100 ml bottle to box dimensions with 2.0 mm board.
| Bottle (100 ml) | Bottle mm (H×W×D) | Interior mm | Exterior @2.0 mm board |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall | 140×55×40 | 150×65×50 | 154×69×54 |
| Standard | 125×65×50 | 135×75×60 | 139×79×64 |
| Wide | 120×75×55 | 130×85×65 | 134×89×69 |
Cap height trap
Brands often forget the spray cap. A 50 ml bottle's glass may be 95 mm but the capped height is 108 mm; size to the capped dimension or the lid will not close.
Specification
Clearance rule: 3 mm minimum, 5 mm recommended for drop protection.
Finished-size tolerance: ±0.5 mm standard, ±1.0 mm for large boxes.
FAQ
How much clearance should I add per side?
3 mm minimum, 5 mm recommended. Five millimetres with a paper insert absorbs a 1.2 m drop without rattling the glass.
Do I measure the bottle with or without the cap?
With the cap — capped height is often 8–15 mm taller than the glass and the lid must still close.
What board thickness for a 100 ml box?
Use 2.0 mm board; the heavier bottle needs the extra wall stiffness and the exterior math must include both walls.
Why is my box tolerance ±0.5 mm?
ISO 2768 general tolerances put a standard perfume box at ±0.5 mm finished; large boxes may go to ±1.0 mm.
Will a bigger box cost more freight?
Yes — every 5 mm of oversize per side multiplies across the layer count on a pallet, so right-sizing protects both the product and the cube.
