How to Choose the Right Material for Perfume Boxes: Greyboard, Wrap, and Trade-offs

The material of a perfume box decides its weight, feel, cost, and recyclability. This guide converts greyboard thickness to grammage, compares wrap papers and coatings, lays out the sustainability trade-offs in a decision table, and shows how to write a material spec that prevents QC disputes.

Greyboard grade and grammage

Thickness to grammage

Greyboard (recycled chipboard) is the structural core of a rigid perfume box. Standard grades run 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mm. Convert thickness to grammage at density 0.65–0.70 g/cm3: a 1.5 mm board ≈ 1020 gsm, 2.0 mm ≈ 1360 gsm, and 2.5 mm ≈ 1700 gsm. A 50 ml fragrance typically uses 1.5 mm; a heavy 100 ml or a shoulder box uses 2.0–2.5 mm.

Density and recycled content

Recycled greyboard sits at the upper density end (≈0.70 g/cm3) and is the sustainable default; virgin board is lighter and whiter but costs more and carries a higher footprint. For a mono-material claim, choose FSC Recycled board so the core and wrap both qualify.

Table 1 — Greyboard thickness to grammage at 0.68 g/cm3.

Thickness (mm) Approx gsm Typical use
1.0 680 Light drawer / sleeve
1.5 1020 Mid book-style / 50 ml
2.0 1360 Shoulder / 100 ml
2.5 1700 Heavy luxury / neck box

Wrap paper options

Coated, speciality, and textile

The wrap is what the customer sees and feels. Coated art paper at 157 or 200 gsm takes the highest print fidelity and foil registration (±0.2 mm). Speciality papers — linen, leather-grain, cotton — add texture at a premium. PU or textile wraps read ultra-luxury but break recyclability, so reserve them for limited editions where the ritual outweighs the waste rule.

Soft-touch vs film

A soft-touch film feels premium but is a plastic layer that complicates recycling. A water-based soft-touch varnish reaches most of the feel while keeping the carton in the paper stream. For a 2026 EU launch, varnish is the safer compliance choice.

Match wrap to print method

If you need fine 300 dpi detail and tight foil registration, specify 157–200 gsm coated art paper. Speciality textured wraps can mute fine type, so enlarge small print by 0.5–1.0 pt when using them.

We build all of these in-house — the custom perfume boxes range shows the structures, inserts and finishes available.

Sustainability trade-offs

The three-way tension

Material choice trades cost, look, and recyclability. FSC Recycled board + FSC paper + water-based varnish is the compliant, lower-cost default. Adding a textile wrap or PET lamination boosts luxury feel but fails mono-material recyclability and may breach EU PPWR scoring. State the priority — compliant, luxurious, or cheap — before specifying.

From the factory floor

Warp limit after wrapping: ≤1.0 mm; control via 23 °C / 50% RH conditioning (ISO 187).
FSC claim type matters: FSC 100%, FSC Recycled, or FSC Mix — confirm which the certificate supports.

Decision table

Pick by priority

Table 2 — Material decision by brand priority.

Priority Core Wrap Coating Recyclable?
Compliant FSC Recycled 1.5 mm FSC paper 157 gsm Water-based Yes
Luxurious 2.0 mm board Leather-grain / PU Soft-touch film No
Budget 1.2 mm board Coated 157 gsm Varnish Yes
Balanced FSC 1.5–2.0 mm FSC speciality Water-based Yes

How to write the material spec

RFQ fields that prevent surprises

Write the spec as: greyboard grade and thickness (e.g. FSC Recycled 1.5 mm ≈1020 gsm), wrap paper (FSC coated 157 gsm), coating (water-based varnish), finishing (foil at 110–140 °C, ±0.2 mm), and certificates (FSC-STD-40-004, ISO 9001). Stating grammage and density removes the most common 'this feels light' disputes at QC.

FAQ

What greyboard thickness for a 50 ml box?

1.5 mm (≈1020 gsm at 0.68 density) is the standard for a 50 ml fragrance; use 2.0 mm for a shoulder or 100 ml bottle.

How do I convert thickness to grammage?

Multiply thickness (mm) by density (0.65–0.70 g/cm3) by 1000. So 2.0 mm × 0.68 × 1000 ≈ 1360 gsm.

Is recycled board weaker?

No — at 0.70 g/cm3 recycled board matches virgin for rigid-box stiffness; it is simply greyer and the sustainable default.

Which wrap stays recyclable?

FSC coated or speciality paper with water-based varnish; avoid PET lamination and textile/PU wraps if you need mono-material recyclability.

What certificate backs the claim?

FSC Chain-of-Custody (FSC-STD-40-004) with a stated claim type (Recycled/Mix/100) plus ISO 9001 for process control.
