How Much Do Custom Magnetic Boxes Cost? Structure, Tooling and Quantity

Published price tables for custom magnetic boxes are rarely useful, because cost depends on too many project-specific variables. This guide sets out the six cost drivers, separates one-off tooling from recurring unit cost, explains how quantity changes unit price differently across bands, flags the items usually quoted separately, and ranks six cost-reduction moves by how safely they can be applied.

Typical Cost Ranges

Every cost figure in a packaging quote is conditional on structure, size, material specification, finishing and quantity. Rather than publish numbers that will not hold, the more useful answer is the cost structure — because once you can see where the money goes, you can see which changes are worth making.

Why we do not publish a price table

A magnetic box at 100 mm and a magnetic box at 300 mm differ by far more than their material content — board thickness, accommodation for the larger panel, and freight all change together. A published table either misleads or carries so many caveats it is useless.

What follows instead is the structure that determines your number, and the levers that move it.

The Six Cost Drivers

Table 1: Six cost drivers of magnetic boxes and their relative impact.

Driver Why it moves the price Relative weight
Board specification Thickness and grade scale directly with surface area High
Wrapping material Standard coated stock vs specialty or textured paper High
Magnets Grade, size and count — usually smaller than expected Low–medium
Insert Custom tooling for moulded trays or formed pulp is often the hidden cost Medium–high
Finishing operations Each additional operation adds a pass and labour Medium–high
Assembly labour Hand wrapping and finishing dominate in labour-intensive builds High

Two of these are habitually underestimated: the insert and assembly labour. Buyers often optimise board and magnet while the actual money sits in the tray tooling and the hand-finishing sequence.

Tooling and One-off Costs

One-off costs are what make a small first order disproportionately expensive, and they are the reason a quote for 500 units cannot simply be divided down from a quote for 5,000.

Die-cut forme Required for box components; cost scales with box complexity
Printing plates or screens Depends on process — offset plates, or screens for screen printing
Foil / embossing dies One per design element; a significant item where several are needed
Insert tooling Moulded pulp or vacuum-formed trays require dedicated tooling
Samples Usually charged separately, sometimes credited against the order

From the factory floor

When requesting a quote, be sure to clarify: who owns this cutting forme / foil die / mould, whether it can be taken away, whether it is charged again on reorder, and whether the sampling fee is deducted from the production order.
These questions seem trivial at the first quotation, but directly affect your second-development cost and your bargaining room when switching factories.

How Quantity Changes Unit Price

Unit price falls with quantity for two distinct reasons, and they behave differently:

  • Tooling amortisation: one-off costs spread across more units. This effect is strong at low quantities and disappears at high ones.
  • Process efficiency: longer runs allow better material utilisation and steadier labour. This effect is gradual and continuous.

Table 2: The factors dominating unit price differ by order quantity — understand this to know which stage to negotiate on.

Quantity band What dominates the unit price
Very low (hundreds) Tooling amortisation dominates; unit price can look punitive
Mid (thousands) Amortisation fades; materials and labour set the price
High (tens of thousands+) Process efficiency and material utilisation dominate; further gains are incremental

This is why asking for pricing at several quantity tiers is useful: the curve tells you where the volume breakpoint sits, which is often more decision-relevant than the price itself.

Costs That Are Usually Quoted Separately

These are not hidden deliberately — they simply fall outside the unit price in most quoting conventions. Asking about them upfront avoids surprises at invoicing.

  • Freight and duties — depends on Incoterms agreed; EXW, FOB and DDP are not comparable prices.
  • Packing method — individual polybagging, gift sleeves or export carton specification.
  • Sample charges — including courier cost for sending them to you.
  • Design and structural development — charged separately at some suppliers, included at others.
  • Third-party testing — transit testing or material certification, if required.

Ask which Incoterm the price is quoted on

The same unit is a different number under EXW, FOB and DDP. Comparing prices quoted on different terms is one of the most common sources of a “cheaper” supplier turning out not to be.

Where to Reduce Cost Without Hurting Perception

Cost reduction is not evenly distributed — some cuts are invisible to the customer and others are immediately felt. The following are ordered by how safely they can usually be applied.

  1. Reduce finishing operations. Dropping one pass often removes labour without changing how the box reads.
  2. Standardise board and wrap. Using stocked grades removes cost and lead time.
  3. Simplify the insert. A paperboard structure often replaces a moulded tray at lower cost, provided it carries the load.
  4. Revisit dimensions. Small reductions in the longest side can improve material utilisation and freight together.
  5. Adjust magnet specification. Only after the above — and only if there is no unresolved air gap.
  6. Avoid: reducing board thickness below what the panel needs, or dropping the insert. These are visible immediately.

Conclusion

Magnetic box cost is driven by board, wrap, insert tooling and assembly labour more than by the magnet itself. Ask for several quantity tiers, establish which Incoterm the price sits on, separate one-off tooling from recurring cost, and reduce finishing complexity before touching structural specification. For a structured way to put two suppliers side by side, see how to compare magnetic box quotes.

FAQ

How much does a custom magnetic box cost?

It depends on dimensions, board specification, finishing and quantity — enough variables that a generic figure would mislead. Send the specification and ask for quotes at several quantity tiers instead.

Why is my small order so expensive per unit?

One-off tooling is being spread across very few units. The effect fades quickly as quantity rises, which is why the second tier of pricing often looks dramatically better.

Are magnets a significant part of the cost?

Usually less than expected relative to board, wrap and labour. Programmes that optimise the magnet often find bigger savings in finishing passes.

Is the tooling fee refundable?

Sometimes credited against a production order, sometimes not — and usually there is a threshold. Get it in writing, along with who owns the tooling.

What is the cheapest way to reduce my unit cost?

Usually reducing finishing operations or moving to stocked material grades. Avoid reducing board thickness or dropping the insert — both are immediately visible to the customer.

Should I compare EXW and FOB prices directly?

No. They cover different cost scopes. Convert to the same Incoterm before comparing, or you will misjudge the difference between suppliers.

Budgeting a magnetic box project?

Send the dimensions, structure and target quantity — we can quote several tiers so you can see where the volume breakpoint actually sits.
