Gold Foil Stamping Guide 2026: Foil Grades, Registration, and Application
Gold foil stamping remains the single strongest signal of premium packaging, but getting it right in 2026 means choosing the foil grade, holding registration against the print, and matching the application to your board. This guide covers the leaf chemistry, the temperature-and-pressure window, and the artwork rules that separate crisp gold from cracked, patchy transfer.
What this guide covers
A hot-stamping foil is a multi-layer leaf: a carrier film, a release layer, a colour or metallic layer, and an adhesive. The gold look comes from a vacuum-metallised aluminium layer tinted by the colour coat, not from real gold, which keeps cost sane while reading as metallic. Grades differ by reflectivity, durability, and whether they are calibrated for coated paper, textured paper, or a 1.2 to 3.0 mm greyboard wrap. Premium grades hold a sharper edge on fine type and resist abrasion better in transit.
Bright gold is the mirror finish used on hero logos. Matte or brushed gold reads softer and hides micro-scratches, which suits boxes handled in stores. Patterned and holographic golds add a diffraction effect but need a cleaner die and more precise pressure. Match the grade to the wrap: a textured linen wrap needs a foil with a more aggressive adhesive than a coated 157 gsm art paper.
Hot foil is transferred by a heated metal die. The working window is 110 to 140 degrees C, with a dwell of 0.4 to 1.2 seconds and pressure tuned to the board and the relief. Too low a temperature or too short a dwell and the leaf releases unevenly; too high and the wrap can scorch or the leaf migrates past the die edge. On a 1.5 mm greyboard wrap we typically run near 125 C with a 0.8 s dwell for a crisp, fully bonded mark.
Because the wrap sits over a rigid board, the press needs a make-ready pack that evens the pressure across the foiling area. Skipping this shows as patchy transfer on the board's edges where the wrap meets the wall. We proof on the actual board, not on flat stock, because the curvature changes the contact.
Foil is applied in a separate pass after printing, so it must register to the underlying artwork. The tolerance we hold is plus or minus 0.2 mm; tighter than that risks a visible fringe on fine type. The die is cut from the same vector file as the print, and the press is pin-registered so the foil pass lines up with the CMYK pass. For a registered foil-plus-emboss the emboss die must share that registration exactly.
Most rejects trace to temperature, pressure, or registration, not the leaf itself.
| Defect | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cracking at edges | Temp too low / dwell short | Raise to 110-140 C, lengthen dwell |
| Patchy transfer | Uneven pressure | Add make-ready pack |
| Leaf migration | Temp too high | Lower temperature, shorten dwell |
| Poor register | Die not pin-aligned | Re-pin foil pass to print |
| Scratches in transit | No protection | Add film lamination over foil |
On folding cartons in SBS or FBB at 250 to 450 gsm, gold foil bonds cleanly because the surface is flat and coated. On rigid boxes the foil sits on the wrap over greyboard, so the make-ready matters more and we prefer a brighter grade to compensate for the slight surface give. On kraft the gold reads warmer and less mirror-like; brands that want a rustic-luxury look choose this deliberately.
From the factory floor
Foil temperature window 110-140 C; typical run 120-130 C on coated wrap.
Dwell 0.4-1.2 s; pressure set per board with a make-ready pack.
Registration tolerance plus or minus 0.2 mm against the print.
Spec the gold by physical swatch; target Delta E under 2-3 versus the approved chip.
Proof on the real board
Never approve foil from a flat-stock proof. The wrap-over-greyboard curvature changes pressure and edge sharpness. Our defect-control write-up is at /blog/056 and the finishing comparison at /blog/spot-uv-vs-foil-stamping-vs-embossing.
FAQ
Is gold foil real gold?
No. It is metallised aluminium tinted to read as gold, which keeps cost low while looking metallic. Real gold leaf is used only for archival or very low-volume luxury pieces.
Why is my foil cracking?
Almost always the die is too cool or the dwell too short, so the leaf does not release fully. Move into the 110-140 C window and extend dwell toward 0.8-1.2 s.
Can foil go on textured paper?
Yes, with a grade formulated for textured surfaces and a more aggressive adhesive. Proof on the actual wrap because the grain affects edge sharpness.
Should foil be laminated?
If the box is handled roughly or ships long distances, a film lamination over the foil prevents abrasion. For protected retail display, foil alone is fine.
Stamp gold that actually looks premium
Send your artwork and wrap spec and we will match the foil grade, run a temperature-and-pressure proof on your board, and deliver a sampled swatch before production.
